History

The beginning of The Rocks can be dated back to 1788. During that time, the Cadigal people called the place as Tallawoladah. Early structures were made of local sandstone and became the origin of its name. The place did not have a good reputation back in the 1800s as this was the place for convicts and prostitutes and later dominated by gangsters. But as time passed by, The Rocks has changed its reputation. The urban area came under the control of the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority.
